Pittsburgh jazz artists under 40 years of age are prominent in Pittsburgh, and making their mark on the national jazz scene. Hear music from The Funky Fly Project, Benny Benack III, Brett Williams, Joe Saylor, Anton DeFade, Mark Jackovic, Lucas Ashby and Tony DePaolis, including collaborations with Jon Batiste, Marcus Miller and more.

MCG Jazz Spotlight Show hosts Marty Ashby and Renée Govanucci feature sounds from Pittsburgh Jazz Artists from the latest wave of talent - Friday and Sunday at 6:00 pm and Saturday at 1:00 pm.

September has a great number of notable Jazz Birthdays, including the 90th Birthday of Sonny Rollins on September 7th. On the program, we play some Sonny, and share a new interview of Sonny with Lee Mergner.

Music from Deanna Witkowski - featured at a Jazz Poetry Month event saluting Nat King Cole on September 16th.

We also hear from Roger Humphries and the RH Factor, back at an in person setting over the weekend a Con Alma and will also be one of two groups anchoring the 34th Black Political Empowerment Project B-PEP Jazz event on September 21st.

Online events this month will feature performances from the archives from the Bob Mintzer Big Band, Joe Negri and more, plus live-streamed events with the likes of guitarist Sheryl Bailey, bassists Dwayne Dolphin and Tony DePaolis, pianist Frank Cunimondo and more.

We talk to saxophonist and bandleader Tony Campbell about upcoming live and virtual events he’s involved with, including a new online series of “The Songs of Pittsburgh,” which has attracted thousands of views in recent weeks.

Trombonist Reggie Watkins has been busy with a weekly gig on the patio at Quantum Spirits in Carnegie - but this weekend, he’s having Jeff Bush substitute - because Reggie is performing with Walter White and his very big band for an online show for the Detroit Jazz Festival on Sunday.

We also hear music from Waclav Zimpel, one of the performers set to play for the Virtual Jazz Poetry Month events in September from Alphabet City / City of Asylum on the North Side - now in it’s 16th year.

Plus, a musical memory of Charlie Parker from Pittsburgh’s Eddie Jefferson, Richie Cole from his Hollywood Madness record with Bruce Forman and the Manhattan Transfer, and Jazz sounds from Pittsburgh young lions and torchbearers.

We celebrate with a number of rare musical finds, plus some special links. Also, more on the restoration of the film Jazz on a Summer’s Day with Sandra Schulberg, President of IndieCollect, the non-profit that has made the film shine, again.
