Black History Month is a time to consider stories, connections and influences. As we look at jazz in Pittsburgh and beyond, we seem to be living in times of history-making for the future. There’s a tune that Dizzy Gillespie and John Lewis wrote in about 1948 called “Two Bass Hit.” Many folks have performed and recorded it over the years, including Pittsburgh Pianist Sonny Clark. We start the show off with that - but then add one more Bass - with three Pittsburgh Bass masters highlighted with new recording projects.

Dr. King’s Essay on the importance of Jazz to humanity and the Civil Rights movement was not a speech, but it was written at the request of the festival organizers. The words are powerful .

Much of the power of our Freedom Movement in the United States has come from this music. It has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when courage began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits were down.
And now, Jazz is exported to the world.
