Springing into Jazz - The Scene

We may have some rain for a good part of the weekend - but jazz is already in bloom in Pittsburgh, and some great tidings of the music is in our future.

April includes Sean Jones for Kente Arts at the New Hazlett, April 26th with a cast of talents from Baltimore, where he now teaches at the Peabody Institute. We visit with Sean about music, teaching and his northeast Ohio roots and Pittsburgh connections.

Bob Mintzer on WDR Big Band Mandolins, Appreciating Jazz in April - The Scene

With visit with Bob Mintzer on his new recording with Germany’s WDR called “Bluegrass” with Mike Marshall and Darrell Anger, this is plowing a new field for big band sounds.

Plus, sounds from April music features in Pittsburgh - Salsamba, Al Di Meola, Craig Davis, Don Aliquo Jr and Sr, Howie Alexander, Raul Midón, and Sean Jones.

The Spring season has jazz in bloom in Pittsburgh - including a return to Pittsburgh by iconic guitarist Al Di Meola with a return to his “roots” in the 70’s.

We had the chance to talk with Al about what he’s up to and what to look forward to with his upcoming show Wednesday, April 9th at the Oaks Theater in Oakmont.

Brandee Younger at the New Hazlett and on The Scene

The Brandee Younger Trio comes to the New Hazlett Theater on the Northside for Kente Arts, Saturday night, March 22nd. We had the chance to visit with the very busy jazz harp innovator this week about her musical journey, which has also included classical music, the flute and the trombone.
