Jazz Poetry Moves to May on the North Side, plus more jazz happenings on the Scene

Oliver Lake

WZUM is again a Media Sponsor for Jazz Poetry Month at City of Asylum / Alphabet City, North Side - and we visit with Abby Lembersky, the Director of Programs at City of Asylum about the move of the event from September to May.

This year’s Jazz Poetry features 8 in-person events from May 8 through the 25th with more than 30 artists from more than 15 countries.

Quite notably, this year’s Jazz Poetry will also bring saxophone legend Oliver Lake back to the north side to perform as a part of the series. Lake was a great advocate for the ground-breaking series when it began. In the first year of Jazz Poetry, Lake collaborated with City of Asylum’s first writer-in-residence Huang Xiang and continued to participate every year until the live festival was suspended during the pandemic.

We feature music from some of the performers on our show, including Oliver Lake, saxophonist Uri Gurvich, and pianist Caludio Cujaniz who recorded and improvised stride piano work at Alphabet City.

We also hear sounds from two upcoming headliners for the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival in September, bassist Ron Carter and vocalist Samara Joy.

Plus, music from upcoming performer at MCG Jazz in May - Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra with two shows at MCG Jazz on Saturday May 21st.

From the Pittsburgh Scene, we turn to the pages of Jazz Central for a couple of active performers - vocalist Maureen Renihan and guitarist Mark Strickland.
