September homecomings, returns and farewells on the Scene - on WZUM

September homecomings, returns and farewells on the Scene.

The Monroeville Jazz Festival is this weekend - with a homecoming for vocalist Lisa Ferraro, and a welcoming return to 87 year young saxophonist and producer extraordinaire, Houston Person. We visit with Lisa about coming to Monroeville for September 3rd - and about how she first met Houston Person on the west coast.

Also on the stage at the Tall Trees Amphitheater from 2-8pm Saturday - drummer Jevon Rushton’s band with vocalist Grace Elliott, Dr. Alton Merrell with the Jazz Gospel group Impact and Hugo Cruz and Caminos.

We’ll also share music and our 2019 interview with the great organist (and more) Joey DeFrancesco. Joey passed away last week at the age of 51.

We also look forward to the Pittsburgh Blues and Heritage Festival September 14-15 and the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival September 17-18th at the Highmark Stadium on the Southside (plus a special concert by Ron Carter at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, September 16th.

September will be good and busy for fans of jazz and blues this fall — guitarist Julian Lage to the Oakmont Theater, September 13th, vocalist Catherine Russell for Kente Arts at the New Hazlett Theater, September 10th, The Levin Brothers with a newly added show at MCG Jazz with flutist Ali Ryerson - along with a whole raft of MCG Jazz concerts, including the return of pianist Monty Alexander, September 24.

And a stunning array of club dates by Pittsburgh Based artists - keeping the scene vibrant and energized.
