Gershwin Appreciation, Byron Stripling with the PSO, Bell and Goods at the Greer Cabaret and More on the Scene on WZUM

April continues to spring forth with great music on the Pittsburgh jazz scene - and some of it has gone symphonic!

We visit with trumpeter, composer and conductor Byron Stripling - leading the Pittsburgh Symphony this weekend ( April 12-14, Friday and Saturday night and a Sunday matinee) at Heinz Hall with a great outpouring of beloved music by George Gershwin.

We also share music from coming to the “Jazz Club” at the Greer Cabaret Theater - with Poogie and Winston Bell performing their music and that of Bell family musical patriarch Charles Bell - Saturday April 13th. Saturday the 20th brings bassist Richie Goods back to Pittsburgh with vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu with their recent project “Connected.”

This weekend also Also, the musical review Dinah! opens on April 12th with shows through the 28th in the Madison Arts Center - 3401 Milwaukee Street in Schenley Heights, presented by the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theater. Written by Ernest McCarty, Dinah! is an exploration of the last year of legendary blues and jazz singer starring Delana Flowers as Dinah Washington.

Another visit to Pittsburgh comes to City of Asylum Monday April 15 with the band Teiku and an album release featuring jazz interpretations of Ukrainian Passover melodies.

Friday April 19, the Paxton / Spangler band comes to Fermata Brewing from Detroit with their blend of everything from Fats Waller and Louis Jordan to the Meters.

Plus, on the air and online from WZUM - we’ll be sharing the 2024 NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert - April 13th from Kennedy Center - which will include trumpeter Terence Blanchard as an honoree.
