TK Blue on Randy Weston for Kente, Richie Goods and Chien Chien at the Greer on the Scene on WZUM

This weekend is filled with jazz treasures in Pittsburgh - and we visit with the leaders of two of them on the program.

One is saxophonist T.K. Blue, former Musical Director for the legendary composer, pianist and bandleader Randy Weston.

Saturday night at 7:30, Kente Arts presents The African Rhythms Alumni Quintet: A Tribute to Randy Weston - featuring saxophonist TK Blue, bassist Alex Blake, master percussionist Chief Baba Neil Clarke, trombonist Frank Lacy and pianist Sharp Radway. All of them have deep connections with Dr. Weston and his music.

Our conversation with TK Blue went on for nearly an hour, so we only have time for a part of it on the show - but we’ll transcribe it and share the rest of it, soon. We talked not just about Randy Weston and his music, but TK Blue’s new release on Arcadia records, TK’s participation on last weekend’s NEA Jazz Masters program (in tribute to our friend Willard Jenkins), the newfound awareness of groundbreaking musical influences like bandleader James Reese Europe and pianist Luckey Roberts (the latter a favorite of Randy Weston).

We also visit with bassist Richie Goods and Vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu. Richie, the standout bassist from Pittsburgh comes home this weekend with Chien Chien to present their recent project Connected at the Green Cabaret Theater Saturday April 20th brings bassist Richie Goods back to Pittsburgh with vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu with their recent project “Connected.”

The Scene - an hourlong radio show - Thursday night at 6, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday at 5 on WZUM
