The first airing of The Scene this weekend is on June 19th - Juneteenth - an important day in American history - when the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation came to Texas in 1865.
As a pert of the program, we share a bit of the “Nine Lives Project” by Ohio saxophonist and composer Chris Coles - featuring Trumpeter Sean Jones - and narrated by Orlando Watson, now with the August Wilson African American Cultural Center. The Nine Lives Project was a feature of last year’s Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.
We also hear uplifting music from Dr. Billy Taylor and Russell Malone. Music of the late Mr. Malone (who passed away a year ago August) with pianist Diana Krall - she’s coming to Heinz Hall July 2nd.
Saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis (often with Orrin Evans) is back in Pittsburgh next Tuesday June 24 with the adventurous trio “Ember” a the Government Center on the Northside. we hear music from Caleb’s recent release “the True Story of the Invention of Batteries.”
Plus music from harmonica artist Clint Hoover, who is holding a farewell show at 565 Live Speakeasy in Bellevue - Sunday afternoon into the evening on June 29th.
