This week marked the last episode of Emmet's Place. Pianist Emmet Cohen led a remarkable collection of musical friends, staring during COVID - it was on YouTube. 5 1/2 years and 137 episodes featuring an amazing array of jazz talent from Harlem in New York City. We celebrate that on this episode of The Scene this week as we revisit a conversation we had with emmet about emmet's place last year before the Pittsburgh international Jazz festival. You can find a full episode of Emmett's Place from this last edition here on this page at WZUM it is also notable that Joe sailor and Benny Benack the third, two notable Pittsburgh originals are also featured on the episode.
On the radio, we celebrate emmet Cohen and Emmett's place and also a number of people who are coming to the Pittsburgh scene in the next few days and weeks including the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and Nicole Mitchel at MCG Jazz, tuba artist Jim Self with vocalist Jessie Wills at Con Alma, Sunday at 5. We’ll also hear the latest from Pittsburgh native - guitarist Shawn Purcell, coming back for a gig at Con Alma in January.
Plus, sounds from John Shannon and Reggie Watkins - both with new releases - and a nod to John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton of the Clayton Hamilton Orchestra in a recent recording the bassist and drummer did of the music of Pittsburgh’s Dodo Marmarosa with Pittsburgh pianist Craig Davis.
All of that on the scene here on the Pittsburgh jazz channel WZUM.
