Song for My Father at 60, B-Pep Jazz celebrates 40, and a new Horace Silver Blue Note on the Scene

60 years ago, the Horace Silver classic album Song for My Father was released by Blue Note Records - featuring Pittsburgh’s own Roger Humphries on drums. That same year, the Horace Silver Quintet appeared at “The Penthouse” in Seattle - and a recording by Jim Wilke for KING-FM radio has surfaced and now become a new release - chronicling the Horace Silver Quintet of that time - featuring Roger at the Drums, Horace Silver - piano, Joe Henderson - sax, Woody Shaw - trumpet and Teddy Smith - bass.

We have a sneak preview of that new release - the vinyl version of which goes on sale October 24th with a special booklet featuring memories from the time - including from Roger Humphries.

Also - the annual gathering of the Pittsburgh Jazz community, B-Pep Jazz, is October 27th at the Heinz History Center - we’ll play music from some of the performers and also visit with Tim Stevens on how this event has become such a major Pittsburgh Jazz event - and significant fundraiser for the Black Political Empowerment Program. Sounds from Don Aliquo, Sr, Tony Campbell, Fred Pugh, Eric Johnson and Tim Stevens, himself.

We also share music from Joe Chambers - the legendary drummer coming for the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert in November.

Thursday night at six, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on WZUM.
