Don Was, Stella Cole and More on The Scene

The start of December has us scrambling to keep up with a busy and exciting calendar of events for the holidays and into the new year.

It includes vocalist Stella Cole, who first came to Pittsburgh about a year ago with Benny Benack III. She first got major attention from her appearances on YouTube, and sharing her musical journey with the American Songbook and jazz, not the “standard” for her generation, but a mode that serves her very well. We share a visit with Stella Cole from last January, and some of her music. She plays at City Winery December 9.

We also share a visit with the musician, filmmaker, producer and President of Blue Note Records, Don Was. He’s coming to Pittsburgh with the Pan-Detroit Ensemble at the Thunderbird Music Hall, January 16th. We talk about his journey coming BACK to playing live music, and why it is so powerful and rewarding.

Plus, music from Sandy Staley and Etta Cox (Etta is at Con Alma this Sunday), guitarist Shawn Purcell (at Con Alma January 16th, and he has a new record out, “Oblivity.” Also, the new one from bassist Dwayne Dolphin, “Let the Music Play.” Dwayne is at the New Hazlett for Kente Arts, Saturday night.

The Scene - Thursday night at six, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on WZUM.
