The Ellington - Strayhorn Nutcracker at the Carnegie in Carnegie - Con Alma in Need - The Scene

We visit with saxophonist, scholar and bandleader Adam Lee-Morgan about his orchestra’s coming performance at the Music Hall at the Carnegie in Carnegie, Monday December 22nd. The featured music is the Ellington/Strayhorn adaptation of Tchaikovsky‘s Nutcracker Suite. Adam tells the story of how the work and this show came to be.

We also visit with John Shannon - guitarist, bandleader and co-owner of the jazz, food and beverage venue in downtown Pittsburgh, Con Alma. 6 years into its being, Con Alma is at a turning point, financially, and needs an injection of extra funding to keep the doors open. This is not unlike recent efforts to help notable modern venues like Smalls and Mezzrow in New York City and Keystone Korner in Baltimore.

We hear music from the Ellington and Strayhorn Nutcracker, sounds from John Shannon, plus saxophonist Jason Kush, appearing this weekend at Con Alma.

The Scene - Thursday night at six, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on WZUM.
