Holiday sounds and stories - Mel Tormé, Charlie Brown, Bella and more on the Scene

There is much holiday season music around with a jazz feel to it - and much of it with good stories behind the sounds, too.

  • Mel Tormé and his musical writing partner Bob Wells whipping up the classic “Christmas Song” in about 40 minutes as a balm for an uncomfortably hot Los Angeles summer;

  • A few years ago, our friends at CBS Sunday Morning produced a feature that reunited former child singer/actors for what became an unexpected Vince Guaraldi classic, Christmas Time is Here.

  • Plus, we play some Pittsburgh-rooted sounds by Andrew Kirk and Pittsburgh Holiday sounds from Johnny Costa, Joe Negri, Tania Grubbs, Stephen Phillip Harvey, Mark Strickland and Tony DePaolis, a Reid Hoyson holiday project with Hendrick Meurkens, and also a Michael Franks Christmas tune that is clearly firmly rooted in Los Angeles.

  • Plus, a musical intro from a past holiday show that was interrupted by our recently departed kitten, Bella (named for Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald - she was a small, endearing cat). Bella left us a month ago after a couple of years of heath concerns that she nonetheless endured through, and a frequent co-producer of many of our radio programs.
