Chuck Mangione in the MCG Jazz Spotlight

Trumpeter / Flugelhorn star Chuck Mangione died in Rochester, NY July 22nd at the age of 84.

To celebrate the life and music of trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer and bandleader Chuck Mangione, we are airing a very special archival episode of the MCG Jazz Spotlight Show. This weekend, Marty Ashby reaches back to the rich trove of interviews from the MCG Jazz stage - featuring highlights from a 1996 interview with Tony Mowod.

Chuck talks about his early years in upstate New York, visiting Pittsburgh’s Crawford Grille in the late 1950’s with his band, being recruited as a high schooler by Art Blakey.

Chuck shares about leaving the Eastman School of Music to join the Jazz Messengers lineup that included bassist Reggie Workman and pianist Keith Jarrett. He also discusses the years of hits with his own band - including massive hits like "Chase the Clouds Away" and "Feels So Good".

Plus, stories of jazz greats in the Mangione living room in New York, enjoying a family dinner of spaghetti with numerous jazz legends around the table.
