February Jazz Birthdays and MCG Jazz Connections

Marty Ashby celebrates artists and composers with February birthdays who share a special connection to MCG Jazz.

The program opens with the incomparable Nancy Wilson, whose MCG Jazz releases, R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal) and Turned to Blue, both earned Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album. These landmark recordings not only honored a February-born icon — they cemented the artistic reach of MCG’s concert hall and record label on the national stage.

Between those bookends, you’ll hear the intimate interplay captured on Alone Together with Rufus Reid, and the swing-rooted elegance of Uptown Elegance, featuring Pittsburgh’s own Joe Negri alongside clarinet legend Buddy DeFrancoand vibraphonist Terry Gibbs. Also, the MCG Jazz release Ladies Sing for Lovers, where Frank Mantooth and Karrin Allyson bring Tadd Dameron’s “If You Could See Me Now” to life.

It’s a February birthday celebration with a distinctly Pittsburgh heartbeat — honoring the artists who helped build the sound, spirit, and legacy of MCG Jazz.

MCG Jazz Spotlight Show - Friday and Sunday night at 6, and 1pm, Saturday on WZUM.
