A Billie Holiday Story Returns to the Radio - on the Scene

Billie Holiday - her music has influenced many generations of performers across many idioms.

Returning to WZUM in April will be the award-winning 13 part series, No Regrets: The Music and Spirit of Billie Holiday. Starting in April - Friday and Sunday nights at 7, Mondays at 11am on WZUM

In an early nod to that program, we turn to 1956 - Billie Holiday’s autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues was published to great attention, including two related shows at Carnegie Hall in New York on November 10th (and midnight of the 11th), 1956.

We have a recording from that triumphant night in New York to share on the program. Billie Holiday appeared at Carnegie Hall more than 20 times over her musical career.

Mandolin master Mike Marshall joins forces with Brazilian guitar virtuoso Alessandro Penezzi for a spirited evening of choro, samba, and improvisation at MCG Jazz - Tuesday March 31st

Marshall, a former member of the David Grisman Quintet, brings decades of genre-blending creativity to the stage. Penezzi, one of Brazil’s most soulful and technically dazzling guitarists, is a celebrated figure in Brazilian popular music. We share some of their music apart - to hear them, together - we have Tuesday night!

Also, Sounds from Tony Campbell, Bethany James, Fred Pugh, Dwayne Dolphin and more on the Scene. Thursday night at six, Friday and Saturday at noon, Sunday afternoon at 5 on WZUM.
