Mary Lou Williams - Adam Lee-Morgan tour the West Coast - and More Visits to Pittsburgh on the Scene

Mary Lou Williams is a jazz legend who is also a Pittsburgh original - and scholar and bandleader Adam Lee-Morgan has been on tour to the west coast to celebrate her music and share it from San Diego to Seattle.

We talked with Adam earlier this week - while he’s still in San Francisco - about the tour and how it has been received. He’s heading back to Pittsburgh, now, where he is a PhD candidate in the Jazz Studies program at the University of Pittsburgh.

Coming up Saturday May 30th at the Rankin Croation Home Ballroom at 7pm, he Adam Lee-Morgan Jazz Orchestra will present traditional swing-era sounds, including works by Mary Lou Williams, an event of three sets of music for dancer and listeners, alike.

While Adam Lee-Morgan is returning to Pittsburgh, many on the scene have big plans, too, and many other notable performers are coming to visit - please see the Jazz Central Calendar - as June and July also filling with live events to share.

Among the highlights, guitarist Al Schulman and vocalist Stacey Schulman com to Con Alma June 4th highlighting sounds from their new duo AS IS release, Crazy World. Friday June 5th, guitarist Bill Frisell visits the City Winery.

The Roger Humphries Boat Ride, returns to the Gateway Clipper Fleet on Sunday June 28th with a little big band Also in June, a fundraiser event for the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival featuring Sean Jones and a special “Miles at 100” Event - Tuesday June 23rd at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center.

Summer Jazz in the Cultural District returns outdoors, now to the new Arts Landing site, downtown - also featuring Roger Humphries’ RH Factor on June 16th - and every other week jazz happenings that include Kenny Blake, Tubby Daniels, Tommy Lehman, Aurora Jazz Fusion, Reid Hoyson, Theron Brown an Etta Cox - plus Delfeayo Marsalas and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra - Saturday June 13th.
