Flutist Jamie Baum with Marty Ashby in the MCG Jazz Spotlight

Marty Ashby welcomes special guest, flutist Jamie Baum for a wide-ranging conversation previewing her June 26 appearance at MCG Jazz with her outstanding septet.

The conversation spans Baum’s own music and the recordings that helped shape her artistic voice, moving between selections from her new album What Kind of Times Are These and influential recordings by artists including Herbie Mann, Hubert Laws, Richie Beirach, and Miles Davis.

The playlist includes Baum’s own work alongside recordings like Hubert Laws’ “Caminos Cruzados” — released on the MCG Jazz label — as well as classics including Moment's Notice and Miles Davis’ unforgettable 1954 recording of It Never Entered My Mind. Together, the music paints a rich portrait of the artists, ideas, and experiences that helped shape Baum’s approach as both a composer and bandleader.

The MCG Jazz Spotlight - Friday and Sunday at 6pm, Saturday at 1 on WZUM.
