Marty Ashby welcomes a group of friends and collaborators who are helping bring live music to audiences both on the MCG stage and throughout the Pittsburgh region.
Mandy Wilson from WQED-FM previews an October 20 event pairing live jazz performances with archival treasures from the station’s legendary Jazz Scene program. Alyson Bonavoglia from Calliope House shares details on two outstanding folk and bluegrass performances coming to MCG this season, while City Theatre Artistic Director Claire Drobot discusses the Pittsburgh premiere of the new musical IN CLAY.
Also, Brian Magee from the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh joins Marty to preview the organization’s annual Soirée, where MCG is helping provide the music with a stellar local jazz ensemble joined by internationally acclaimed harmonica and vibraphone artist Henrik Meurkens. And Marco Marcinko looks ahead to the Keystone Jazz Orchestra’s November appearance at MCG as part of the PA250 Celebration tour traveling across Pennsylvania.
Along the way, Marty features music connected to these performances and partnerships, including a track from Hugo Cruz’s new album Figure It Out featuring Pittsburgh Jazz Legend Roger Humphries; music from Rachel Sumner and Tony Trischka, both featured in upcoming Calliope performances at MCG; Henrik Meurkens; the Count Basie Orchestra’s take on Sammy Nestico’s “Ya Gotta Try”; “Ray’s Idea” from the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy album; Pittsburgh guitar legend Joe Negri and more.
It’s an hour celebrating collaboration, community, and the many ways Pittsburgh’s arts organizations are working together to bring great music and memorable experiences to audiences across the region.
