A Hint of Spring in Stride - the Changing Pittsburgh Scene on the Scene

We share from vocalist Stacey Kent - a lovely rendition of “I’m Putting All My Eggs in One Basket,” plus haren back to when that song first came out, 1936 in Follow the Fleet with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.

Fred also did a piano version, early in the film - on an upright that he lightly tunes and then plays! We play that on the show - and have more on this page in videos.

Also on the Scene - we visit with saxophonist Tony Campbell and John Shanon - guitarist and co-owner of the club Con Alma. This week was the last Tuesday jam session at Con Alma (at least for a while) as Con Alma trims their schedule for food and entertainment to 4 nights a week - Thursday through Sunday.

Among the players on hand for Tuesday March 31 - Justin McCord; Fred Pugh; Chris McGraw, Tony Campbell, Jevon Rushton, Ethan Zawacki, Victor Garzotto, Mike Guido, Jonathan DiGiulian, Billy Kuhn, Sonny Tabler, Jacob McBride and many more.

John Shannon will be at City of Asylum, Thursday April 9 for the vinyl release event for his collection “A Day in Tarifa.”

These were the days of the rise of Art Tatum and the prominence of George Gershwin. A year earlier, 1935, here’s Fred at the keys in Roberta (with a very young Ginger Rogers).

Move forward 20 years to 1957 with Fred in a celebrity interview with Edward R. Murrow - this time, on drums!
